What is Kiwanis?

Kiwanis is a global organization of members is dedicated to serving the children of the world. Kiwanis and its family of clubs— more than 670,000 members strong—annually raise more than US$100 million and dedicate more than 18.5 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children. Members of every age attend regular meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that help their communities. Members also make an impact throughout the world by participating in Kiwanis International’s Global Campaign for Children, The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus.

What does the name "Kiwanis" mean?

The name "Kiwanis" was adapted from the expression "Nunc Kee-wanis" in the Otchipew (Native American) language, meaning "We have a good time," "We make a noise," or, under another construction, "We trade or advertise." Some persons prefer to pronounce the word "ki"; others, "kee."

Facts

Kiwanis International was founded in Detroit, Michigan, January 21, 1915. Today, Kiwanis has 670,000 members, including it's Sponsored Youth. Though Kiwanis serves in countries all around the world, its basic objectives are the same.

The Objectives of Kiwanis International

  • TO GIVE PRIMACY to human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
  • TO ENCOURAGE the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • TO PROMOTE the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
  • TO DEVELOP by precept and example a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
  • TO PROVIDE through Kiwanis Clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to tender altruistic service, and to build better communities.
  • TO COOPERATE in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Today we have 18 Divisions – 140 Clubs in Georgia (4923 members) and 7000 Clubs in the World with 600,000 members

The Kiwanis Club Historic Roswell (KCHR) works with Meals on Wheels, Child Development Academy (serving North Fulton), North Fulton Charities, also serving North Fulton, Bike Rodeo, Keep Roswell Beautiful Road Clean Up, K Kids (Elementary) Builder’s Club (Middle School), Key Club (High School), Circle K (College) and Aktion Club (adults with disabilities) 12,000 members worldwide. All of these clubs we support are the largest service clubs in the world
